Shockwave therapy is ideal for many of the musculoskeletal conditions common in orthopedic physiotherapy. Using acoustic pressure waves, shockwave therapy targets an affected area to stimulate metabolism and circulation, stimulating the cells responsible for healing damaged tissue and bone. In addition to helping the body heal faster, shockwave therapy is a non-invasive and drug-free treatment modality.
Here are a few of the many conditions that shockwave therapy has been clinically proven to successfully treat.
Back and Neck Pain
Back and neck pain are among the most common impairments in orthopedic physiotherapy. Patients can experience vertigo, headaches, trouble sleeping, and more.
A study published in Clinical Rehabilitation compared shockwave therapy to standard care (ultrasound + hot pack + self-stretch exercises) for treating neck and upper back myofascial pain syndrome. Seventy-two patients were divided into three groups. One group received shockwave therapy, a second group standard care, and a third control group performed just self-stretch exercises.
Researchers noted that shockwave therapy was significantly more effective in reducing pain intensity one month after treatment.
Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is a frequent cause of foot pain, limited mobility, and more.
A meta-analysis published in Foot and Ankle Surgery examined 13 trials of 1,185 patients to compare the efficacy of shockwave therapy with other therapies in treating chronic plantar fasciitis. Among these patients, 637 received shockwave therapy while 548 were treated with other therapeutic modalities.
Researchers concluded that patients treated with shockwave therapy had increased success or improvement rates, increased modified Roles & Maudsley scores, a reduction of pain scales, reduced return to work time, and fewer complications.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is the deterioration of the joints, causing inflammation, pain, and reduced mobility, which affects the quality of life for many people.
A systematic review and meta-analysis published in the International Journal of Surgery examined the efficacy and safety of shockwave therapy for knee osteoarthritis. Researchers included three randomized controlled trials and three cohort studies involving 589 patients. They noted patients treated with shockwave therapy experienced a significant reduction in pain scores and improvements in the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index.
Researchers concluded that shockwave therapy was “efficacious and safe for reducing pain and improving knee function in patients with knee osteoarthritis.”
