Shockwave therapy recovery time is one of the great advantages of using this technology. Because shockwave therapy uses acoustic pressure waves to stimulate cells in the body that are responsible for bone and tissue healing, it has been proven to accelerate the healing process in cases where the body has been unable to heal on its own.
Here is some of the clinical evidence demonstrating shockwave therapy’s ability to get patients back to daily activities quickly.
Shockwave Therapy Recovery Time for Various Musculoskeletal Conditions
- Achilles tendinopathy
Chronic Achilles tendinopathy is one of the most common sports injuries, accounting for nearly a fifth of all running injuries. Chronic pain and long recovery times prove to be frustrating to patients, particularly those who aren’t responding to conservative treatments.
A study published in BioMed Research International measured the effectiveness of using shockwave therapy to treat patients with chronic insertional Achilles tendinopathy after three months of conservative treatment failed. Patients received four sessions in total at a two-week interval.
At the 12-month follow-up, 65 per cent of patients no longer had pain, 27.5 per cent were able to resume normal activities despite residual pain, and only 7.5 per cent still complained about pain. Researchers concluded that shockwave therapy “is recommended, in combination with an eccentric exercise program, in patients with chronic Achilles tendinopathy being both insertional and not.”
- Stress fractures
Stress fractures are particularly common among athletes. Low-risk stress fractures usually respond well to conservative treatment, but a third of patients can develop into high-risk fractures.
In cases where stress fractures fail to heal, patients may elect for surgery because of its assurance of recovery time. However, a study published in the International Journal of Surgery showed that shockwave therapy “significantly reduced pain and recovery time in high-performance athletes with tibial stress fractures.”
- Muscle injuries
A paper from the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research looked at how shockwave therapy helped elite soccer players with acute muscle injuries return to play faster.
The study examined a total of 20 acute muscle injuries including tightness, strains, tears, and contusions. Researchers included shockwave therapy in a multimodal approach, which lead to “shortened lay-off times and reduced re-injury rates amongst elite football players, without causing any adverse effects.”
